Everett K-9 officer endures slow recovery after crash

EVERETT, Wash. -- An Everett Policer office who was badly injured when a stolen vehicle plowed says she remembers very little of what happened.
"I don't recall the collision. I don't recall pretty much the first week post-collision. I really don't remember much of anything," says Officer Suzanne Eviston.
With her faithful police dog Axel by her side, 37-year old Eviston is finally feeling well enough to get and about after so much time in the hospital..
"Two days ago I saw the photos of my collision and that was really overwhelming."
Six-and-a-half weeks ago, a Jeep plowed into the side of Eviston's patrol car.
Eviston suffered horrible injuries to her ribs, shoulder and pelvis. Axel is even wearing a brace for a broken leg.
"Really, his recovery is kinda like mine right now. We just have to take our time and relax and let things heal."
The next few months will still be difficult, but she's hoping to rejoin the Everett Police Department by the end of the year. Firefighters say her good personal health and fitness helped her survive the tremendous impact of the crash.
She says the reinforced metal of Axel's large cage in the patrol car could also be a big reason.
"I think that having a dog cage -- the insert and having a dog -- fortunately was part of what helped save me."
She now has to worry about paying for things that insurance might not, like a special bed and even alternative medical treatments. But Eviston says she's not going to hang it up. She just wants to get back on her feet and take a nice long walk with Axel again.
"I'm really fortunate to be here and I don't take that for granted at all."
Eviston says she's looking forward to Wednesday when that pelvic brace comes off. Axel will have his leg brace taken off on Friday.
The 19-year old suspect in the crash remains in jail, facing a string of criminal charges.
